Shift The Narrative is an effort to build the power communities need to take back control of the narrative on police and violence in Philadelphia.
Philadelphia’s Black and brown communities have suffered the violence of over-policing and structural divestment for generations. But communities struggling against violence in their families and neighborhoods have demanded community-based solutions and systems that go beyond policing. The Shift The Narrative Project is building community narrative power to lift up those solutions, to challenge how newspapers cover violence, police, and mass incarceration, and to center our communities’ needs in the story of what “public safety” means.
Shift The Narrative Project is a collaboration between movement and community leaders including Movement Alliance Project, Free Press, MIC Center, Amistad Law Project, Reclaim PHL, and Youth Arts and Self-Empowerment Project (YASP).
